150 Mile House Schoolhouse

While travelling through 150 Mile House, the Little Red Schoolhouse may catch your eye…

This 1920s schoolhouse is the oldest functional school building in the Cariboo Chilcotin, located beside a section of the former Cariboo Wagon Road (now Highway 97) that opened the area to European settlement.

The school was the first of the Williams Lake School District.

Children from the 150 Mile house community, as well as the surrounding farms and ranches, gathered in the schoolhouse from 1896 to 1958.

The one room schoolhouse was used as a town hall, social centre, and schoolhouse.

In 1980 the decision was made to preserve the schoolhouse as a historic museum, allowing its may visitors to take a step back into the past.
